Living Lab

Naples

Naples represents an emerging School Streets context. The city combines a car-centric legacy with an ongoing transition towards integrated sustainable urban mobility (SUMP-based).

Existing initiatives have been developed in collaboration with schools and the Municipality, but School Streets remain localised. The Naples Living Lab will therefore focus on activating local networks, enabling policies and participatory practices in a car-dominated urban context.

Led by the Department of Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II, the Living Lab will be developed with the Municipality of Naples and local civil society organisations. The Municipality will support local implementation, community engagement and participatory planning workshops involving children, parents and local businesses.

Napoli Pedala will support community engagement, school outreach and cycling-focused activities. It will contribute to the co-design and testing of participatory methods, the collection of qualitative feedback from children and families, logistical coordination and community-based evaluation. Its involvement will help keep cycling and active travel central to the Living Lab.

The Naples Living Lab will apply the common STREET-15 framework through stakeholder mobilisation, youth engagement, community workshops, feedback sessions and pre- and post-evaluation. Activities will be developed iteratively and adapted to local conditions. The findings will contribute to cross-city learning and to locally grounded but transferable policy and design recommendations.
