Living Lab

Bergen

The Bergen Living Lab builds on a context of sustainability-driven planning, child-friendly and walkable urbanism, and School Streets supported by a national strategy.

Its focus is on embedding School Streets in broader climate and education policy through co-creation with children. HVL leads local activities, stakeholder mobilisation and youth engagement, contributing to comparative learning across Bergen, Naples and London.

Two cooperation partners connect the Living Lab with local school communities. Fridalen skole, a public primary school with a Hjertesone in place since 2021, will explore opportunities for its expansion or improvement. Slettebakken FAU, the parents’ working committee associated with Slettebakken skole, represents parent perspectives in a community with significant socio-economic variations. Both partners will support co-design with pupils, parents and staff, provide settings for School Street interventions, contribute to data collection and evaluation, and facilitate communication with their school communities. Slettebakken FAU will also provide feedback from parents to help ensure that interventions respond to local needs.

Within the shared project methodology, participatory activities will include arts-based, playful and interactive tools, community workshops, feedback sessions and pre- and post-intervention evaluations. The work will follow the common Living Lab process of framework development and stakeholder mapping, community activation, iterative implementation and evaluation, and cross-city exchange.
