Living Lab

London

London provides an advanced School Streets context for examining the transition from tactical interventions to permanent and integrated designs, with a particular focus on institutionalisation and equity in access.

Building on a strong strategic planning culture that connects transport with public health, climate and active travel, the London Living Lab will explore how School Streets can become embedded in wider policy and governance frameworks. Participatory methods will engage children, young people and school communities in co-creation, while community workshops, feedback sessions and pre/post evaluations will support the analysis and refinement of interventions. Supported by a shared impact assessment framework and cross-city learning with Naples and Bergen, this work will inform recommendations for scaling up School Streets across different urban contexts.

The University of Westminster leads the project’s scaling and policy analysis and cross-city learning, and supports participatory research in the London Living Lab. Westminster City Council / Cross River Partnership coordinates community engagement with schools, local businesses and residents, and facilitates knowledge transfer between London boroughs and international partners. Together, UoW and WCC lead local stakeholder mobilisation and youth engagement.

The London Borough of Lambeth brings experience from its School Streets programme, supports the identification of schools and communities, and helps coordinate participatory activities, evaluate local impacts and connect findings with borough-wide transport, health and education strategies. Supporting cooperation partners Mums for Lungs and Solve the School Run engage families and school communities, contribute lived experience and parent advocacy, and support community mobilisation and knowledge exchange.
